Fix a GIF export: small text, missing downloads and still images
Published by Optimalium LLC · How we check our work · Report a correction
Troubleshoot this browser GIF maker with reproducible checks for small lettering, cancelled exports, stale files and animation that becomes still.
Where does the problem first appear?
There are three different results to check: the studio preview, the downloaded file and the copy shown by another app. A correct preview does not prove you saved the newest export, and a correct local GIF does not guarantee another service will animate it. Work through the earliest stage that fails.
| What you see | First check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Create GIF file rejects the message | Does the main line contain only spaces? | Enter a visible greeting; the subtitle alone is not enough. |
| Text fits but is too small | Is the line long or the export only 240 pixels wide? | Shorten the wording, remove the subtitle or select a 480-pixel-wide export. |
| The download link disappeared | Did you edit any setting? | Create a fresh file. The previous link is cleared deliberately. |
| Export was cancelled | Is the message still in the controls? | Retry when ready; cancelling does not clear the draft. |
| A sent GIF appears still | Does the downloaded original animate locally? | If yes, investigate the receiving app’s attachment workflow. |
| Your wording disappeared after a reload | Was the result downloaded before leaving? | The maker has no saved-draft recovery. Use a downloaded copy if you kept one. |

Why can a short-looking message become tiny?
Letters have different widths. A line of W characters occupies more space than the same number of narrow letters. The maker starts with a size based on the length, measures the actual wording with the browser font, and shrinks it further if it would cross the available text area. The same layout is used in the preview and export.
We checked the wide-letter case on 27 September 2026 using 28 W characters in the main line and 42 in the subtitle. The saved 480 × 360 PNG and the first GIF frame both kept the visible main text between horizontal pixels 57 and 422, and the subtitle between 64 and 415. This checks the margins for that input and browser; it is not a readability score or a guarantee for every writing system.
Fitting the line can make it too small. At 240 × 180, every letter is half the size it has in the 480 × 360 export. Replace a long main sentence with its purpose, such as “Thanks, Sam”, and put the details in the surrounding message. The accessibility guide explains why the image should not be the only copy of important words.
What happens when you cancel or change a setting?
While a file is being made, the editing controls are disabled and Cancel export remains available beside the progress bar. Cancelling stops that export, restores editing and keeps your words. A cancelled comparison does not offer partially completed downloads as if all three results were ready.
After a successful export, changing the text, palette, movement or dimensions removes its download link and comparison results. This prevents the button from silently delivering an older greeting. Press Create GIF file or Create still PNG again, then save the new result. Your browser may give repeated downloads similar filenames, so inspect the newest file rather than assuming the first one is current.
What if creating the file fails?
Try the smaller dimensions, then a short plain-text message and a PNG export. These steps reduce the work and help distinguish a general rendering failure from GIF encoding. They are troubleshooting steps, not proof that a particular device lacks memory. The maker requires JavaScript; the collection provides direct GIF, PNG and SVG downloads without using the editor.
Do not reload until you have copied any wording you want to keep. Drafts are not saved by this site. If a simple example still fails, use the contact page and include your browser, export dimensions, pattern, steps and a non-sensitive example. Never send account credentials or private messages to reproduce a drawing problem.
Why does the file stop moving after sharing?
Check the actual extension and original file first. A PNG or SVG stays still; renaming it to .gif does not create animation. The GIF exported here contains 24 frames, a total encoded delay of 2.4 seconds and a repeat instruction. Another app can convert the file or show only a poster, so test its documented attachment option.
If the original works, follow the sharing checklist instead of repeatedly re-encoding the same message. If the attachment is too large, the file-size guide explains how to compare real downloads without assuming a fixed compression ratio.
